Auschwitz and the salt mine in one day

Many visitors to Kraków have one free day and two places they want to see: the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It can be done, on a long organised day of about 11 hours. Here is how the day runs, what you need to bring, how to behave at the Memorial and when a shorter pairing makes more sense.

The two sites could hardly be more different. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in Oświęcim is a place of remembrance, visited with a guide and in a quiet, serious frame of mind. The salt mine in Wieliczka is a working monument to centuries of mining, with chambers and chapels carved from salt. Seeing both in one day is long, and the change of mood between them is something to be ready for.

Wieliczka and the Memorial are roughly 80 km apart by road, so the combination tours run for 10 to 12 hours. This guide explains the two combination tours on this site, how they differ, what they ask of you and a gentler half day that pairs the mine with Schindler’s Factory.

The quick answer

Yes, you can do Auschwitz-Birkenau and the salt mine in one day, on an organised tour of about 11 hours. Expect an early pickup, a lunch break where food is not included unless you choose that option, and ID with your name as on the document. If the day sounds too long, pair the salt mine with Schindler’s Factory instead: about 6.5 hours.

Can I do Auschwitz and the salt mines in one day?

Yes, on a combination tour of about 11 hours with transport, entry and guides at both sites. It is a long day, so plan nothing else.

The two tours on this site cover the same ground in slightly different ways. The table sets out what each listing states.

How far is Auschwitz from the salt mines?

Roughly 80 km by road. That distance is why the combination days run to 10 to 12 hours.

Wieliczka is about 15 km south-east of Kraków’s centre, and the Memorial is in the town of Oświęcim. Adding the drive between the two sites to the pickup run in Kraków and the drive home makes the transport alone a large part of the day.

Underground, the salt mine visit takes two to three hours on average on the Tourist Route. At the Memorial, the guaranteed-admission tour lists about 2.5 hours at Auschwitz I and about 1 hour at Birkenau, both with a guide.

Is the salt mine near Auschwitz?

Not really. The salt mine is on the edge of Kraków, while the Memorial is in Oświęcim, roughly 80 km away by road.

The two are often sold together because both are popular day trips from Kraków, not because they are neighbours. If you have two days, visiting each on its own is more relaxed, and the salt mine fits easily into a morning or afternoon. See how long to spend at Wieliczka and how to get from Kraków to Wieliczka.

If you only have one day, a combination tour removes the logistics: one vehicle, one set of tickets and guides at both sites.

How does the combination day run?

An early pickup, a guided visit at each site and a lunch break between them, with the return to Kraków in the evening.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau and salt mine tour picks up from six locations in Kraków within a 5-10 am window, with your time sent by email the day before. It includes the bus, a tour leader, entry tickets, guided tours at both sites and headsets. The salt mine may come first, depending on the day. Guiding is in English.

The guaranteed-admission tour collects you from your hotel between 5:30 and 7:30 am, with an SMS 12 hours before. It visits Auschwitz I and Birkenau with a guide, then the salt mine, and returns by about 7:30 pm. Admission is included, and there is an optional lunch.

What do I need to bring?

An ID document, snacks and a small bag. Give your full name exactly as on your ID when you book.

Entry to the Memorial is personal, so the combination listings ask for your full name and ID. The guaranteed-admission tour adds that personal tickets are non-refundable and that names must match your passport or ID card. It also asks you not to bring large bags; in the salt mine, only bags of up to 20 x 20 x 35 cm go underground.

On the tour from six pickup points, food is not included at the lunch break, so bring snacks. A light layer helps in the mine, where it is 17-18 °C on the Tourist Route, and comfortable shoes help everywhere.

What are the dos and don’ts at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial?

Treat it as a place of remembrance: bring your ID, keep your voice low, dress respectfully and carry only a small bag.

  • Do bring the ID document whose name you gave at booking.
  • Do stay with your guide and follow the instructions given on site.
  • Do dress as you would for a place of mourning.
  • Do keep conversation quiet and phones on silent.
  • Don’t bring a large bag.
  • Don’t treat the visit as a stop between sights; give it your full attention.

The salt mine afterwards has a very different atmosphere. The break between the two sites gives you time to adjust.

Is the combination day too much?

For some visitors, yes. It is about 11 hours with early starts, several hours on foot and a long staircase in the mine.

The guaranteed-admission listing says the day is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, claustrophobia, heart problems or low fitness. The other combination tour is not suitable for wheelchair users and does not recommend it for children under one. In the mine, the first descent alone is about 380 steps; see the steps, the lift and what to wear.

If you have the time, two separate days are kinder: one for the Memorial and one for the mine and the rest of Kraków.

Is there a gentler pairing with the salt mine?

Yes. The salt mine and Schindler’s Factory tour takes about 6.5 hours, with about 2 hours guided in the mine and about 1.5 hours at the factory.

The salt mine and Schindler’s Factory tour starts with hotel pickup or a meeting at the Radisson Blu Hotel Krakow (Tourist Bus Stop), includes fast-track tickets and a guided mine tour with headsets, then a self-guided visit to Schindler’s Factory. It runs in English, and the listing asks you to bring a passport or ID.

It leaves your evening free and still covers two of Kraków’s most visited sights. For more on the mine itself, see St Kinga’s Chapel and what makes the mine special.
