The Wieliczka Salt Mine reaches 327 m below ground and has more than 287 km of passages on nine levels. Visitors see a tiny fraction of that: less than one fiftieth of the passages make up the Tourist Route. Even so, the route is about 3.5 km long and takes two to three hours on average, including the underground museum exhibition.
This guide adds up the time you need: underground, door to door from Kraków, and for the town around the mine. It also explains the Miners’ Route, a separate and more active visit run by the mine.
The quick answer
Plan on two to three hours underground on the Tourist Route, including the museum exhibition. A tour from Kraków takes about two to five hours depending on the option, and a half day with Schindler’s Factory about 6.5 hours. Add an hour if you want to see Wieliczka’s market square or eat at the mine. Combination days with Auschwitz-Birkenau run to about 11 hours.

How much time does it take to visit Wieliczka Salt Mine?
Two to three hours on the Tourist Route, on average, including the underground museum exhibition. The Miners’ Route also takes two to three hours.
The mine runs two visitor routes, and both take a similar time. The table compares them using the mine’s official figures. This site sells tours of the Tourist Route; the Miners’ Route is booked through the mine.
| Route | Length | Depth | Time | Temperature | Start |

The flagship fast-track tour and the hotel-pickup tour list about two and a half to four hours, and the fast-track ticket tour about two and a half to four and a half. Book thisHow long should I spend in Wieliczka?
Half a day covers the mine comfortably. Add time if you want to explore the market square or eat at the mine.
The mine sits in the centre of Wieliczka, a short walk from the market square and the train stop at Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. If you travel independently, an hour on either side of your tour slot lets you look around without rushing.
There is somewhere to eat on both levels: Karczma Górnicza underground and Bistro Posolone on the surface. Toilets are above ground and at two places underground.

What is the difference between the Tourist Route and the Miners’ Route?
The Tourist Route is the classic visit through chambers, chapels and the museum. The Miners’ Route is shorter, cooler and more hands-on.
The Tourist Route covers about 3.5 km, down to 135 m, with brine lakes, underground chambers, St Kinga’s Chapel, mining tools and salt sculptures. It starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft with a descent on wooden stairs and ends with a lift back up.
The Miners’ Route covers about 1.9 km, down to 101 m, at 14-16 °C, starting at the Regis Shaft, the oldest preserved shaft. Visitors act as novice miners: they look for salt, test the air and find the way with lamps. It opens 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is not sold on this site; book it with the mine.

Does the time include the museum?
Yes. The mine’s two to three hours on the Tourist Route include the underground exhibition of the Cracow Saltworks Museum.
The visit runs as one guided walk, so you do not need to set aside extra time for the museum. The guide sets the pace, and leaving the group to sightsee alone is not allowed. The transfer listing gives a sense of the rhythm, with toilet stops at about 40 and 90 minutes into the visit.
The end of the route is quick: a miners’ lift takes you up. For the steps and the lift, see the guide to the steps and what to wear.

What time should I visit the salt mine?
For an early start, choose an early-bird option. The Tourist Route opens at 8:00 am per the official page, though hours vary by date.
The official route page gives 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, but check the mine’s calendar for your date. The fast-track ticket tour has an early-bird option for a first-thing start. The flagship fast-track tour offers pickup from Kraków, a meeting at the mine or a ticket-only option, which makes it easy to match your other plans.
Visitors with limited mobility should note that the mine runs its dedicated tours at the first and last hours, booked in advance by email.

Fast-track entry and a group of up to 15, with pickup from Kraków or a meeting at the mine.
Book thisCan I fit the mine into a half day with another sight?
Yes. The salt mine and Schindler’s Factory tour takes about 6.5 hours, leaving the evening free.
The salt mine and Schindler’s Factory tour includes about 2 hours guided in the mine and about 1.5 hours self-guided at Schindler’s Factory, with fast-track tickets and hotel pickup or a meeting at the Radisson Blu Hotel Krakow. It runs in English, and you should bring a passport or ID.
For a full day with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial instead, read Auschwitz and the salt mine in one day.
Two sights in about 6.5 hours: the salt mine with a guide, then Schindler’s Factory at your own pace.
Book thisIs one visit enough?
For most visitors, yes. The Tourist Route shows the chambers, the chapel and the museum in one guided walk.
If you are curious about mining itself rather than the carved halls, the Miners’ Route is a different experience on another day. For what makes the Tourist Route special, from the chapel 101 m down to the UNESCO listing, see St Kinga’s Chapel and why the mine is worth it.
