How to get from Kraków to Wieliczka

Wieliczka is about 15 km south-east of Kraków’s centre, close enough for a train, a city bus or a short taxi ride. You can also let a tour handle the journey and the ticket. Here is how each option works, how long it takes and which one suits your day.

Getting to the salt mine is easy. Getting there in time for your tour slot, with your ticket sorted, is the part worth planning. The mine runs its Tourist Route in groups led by its own guides at set times, so arriving relaxed at the Daniłowicz Shaft matters more than shaving five minutes off the ride.

There are four ways to travel on your own: the regional train, city bus 304, a taxi or a ride-hailing app, and your own car. Then there are the tours, which collect you from your hotel, a bus station stand or a meeting point and include a fast-track entrance. This guide covers each in turn.

The quick answer

The quickest public option is the regional train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia: about 25 minutes, roughly once an hour, then a short walk to the mine. Bus 304 takes about 40 minutes. A taxi or car takes about a quarter of an hour without traffic. If you would rather not think about timetables or tickets, book a tour with hotel pickup and a fast-track entrance.

How do I get from Kraków to Wieliczka Salt Mine?

Take the regional train for speed on a budget, bus 304 for a simple city-bus ride, a taxi for door-to-door ease, or a tour that includes transport and the ticket.

The table sets the options side by side. Times are approximate and depend on traffic and connections. For the tours themselves, the guide to the best salt mine tour compares what each one includes.

How far is it from the Old Town of Kraków to the salt mines?

About 15 km. Wieliczka is a separate town just south-east of Kraków, and the mine sits in its centre.

Measured from the centre of Kraków, the mine is about 15 km away. In practice that means roughly 25 minutes by train from the main station, about 40 minutes by bus 304, or about a quarter of an hour by road without traffic. From the Old Town, add the walk to Kraków Główny or the bus stop.

The distance is short enough that the visit itself, two to three hours underground on average, takes longer than the journey. Plan the day around your tour time rather than the transport.

How do I take the train to Wieliczka, and how much does it cost?

Take a regional train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. It is a short regional train ticket; the fare is shown at the machine.

Trains take about 25 minutes and run roughly once an hour, so check the next departure before you head to the station. Get off at Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, the stop named after the market square and the mine, and walk the short distance to the Daniłowicz Shaft, where the Tourist Route begins.

The fare changes with the ticket type, so buy at the machine or ticket office and check the amount there. Because trains are roughly hourly, leave a margin before your mine tour slot. If you have booked a tour with a fixed time, an earlier train is the safer choice.

How do I take bus 304 to the salt mine?

Board city bus 304 at Dworzec Główny Zachód on the west side of Galeria Krakowska. The ride takes about 40 minutes.

Get off at Wieliczka Kopalnia Soli for the mine or at Wieliczka Rynek for the market square. The bus is a good choice if you are already near Galeria Krakowska or if the train timetable does not suit you, since it is a single ride with no change.

As with the train, the fare is shown at the ticket machine. Allow for traffic at busy times, because the bus shares the road with cars.

Skip the timetables: a people carrier from your hotel, a fast-track ticket and an official mine guide.

How much is a taxi or an Uber from Kraków to the salt mines?

The fare depends on the time of day and demand. Check it in the app or agree it with the driver before you set off.

A taxi or a ride-hailing car is the easiest independent option for a small group: about a quarter of an hour without traffic, door to door. Ride-hailing apps operate in Kraków and show a price before you confirm, which makes the cost clear in advance. App fares rise and fall with demand, so whether an app is cheaper than a licensed taxi depends on the moment.

For a licensed taxi, ask the driver about the fare before you ride.

Is a tour with transport easier?

Yes, if you want the journey, the ticket and the timing handled together. The tours collect you from your hotel, a bus station stand or a meeting point.

The hotel-pickup tour sends a people carrier to your door with a driver who talks about Kraków on the way, and includes a fast-track ticket. The tour with transport leaves from Stand G5 on the upper coach platform of the Central Bus Station, or offers private hotel pickup for up to 8. The tour with transfer has options with two-way transfer, a ticket-only English tour without transport, and a last-minute option from a meeting point; it also offers child seats for children under 150 cm.

One detail from the flagship listing: hotels in the Old Town and Kazimierz may need an alternative pickup point.

Where does the visit start when I arrive?

At the Daniłowicz Shaft, where the Tourist Route begins with a descent on wooden stairs. Tickets are sold there subject to availability.

Arrive before your slot to leave time for the entrance and the bag rule: only small bags of up to 20 x 20 x 35 cm go underground, and larger items go to free storage. The first part of the route is a long descent on wooden stairs, about 380 steps, and at the end a miners’ lift brings you back up.

For what to wear and how the steps feel, read the guide to the steps and the lift. For timing the whole visit, see how long to spend at Wieliczka.

Which way is best for my day?

Train or bus if you like independent travel and have booked a time slot; a tour if you want pickup, fast-track entry and no timetable to watch.

Independent travellers on a budget usually take the train and buy a mine ticket online in advance. Families and small groups may find a taxi or a hotel-pickup tour simpler, since the ride is short and door to door. Travellers short on time, or arriving in Kraków the night before, may prefer a tour with a set pickup and a fast-track entrance.

Whatever you choose, plan around the guided time slot underground. That is what fixes the shape of your day.
